Can I air-dry a shag?

A person seen from behind with a choppy, layered shag haircut in copper-brown against a warm amber background.

The answer

Yes, many people do. Apply a light product to damp hair, scrunch upward, part it where you like and leave it alone while it dries, because touching it can cause frizz. Straighter hair may look flatter and could benefit from a little root lift with a dryer or a mousse. A diffuser on low heat is an alternative for curls and waves.
