How do I grow out a shag?

A person seen from behind with a choppy, layered shag haircut in copper-brown against a warm amber background.

The answer

Tell your stylist early so they can shape the layers to blend as they lengthen, and expect an in-between stage with occasional tidying around the face and nape. Longer, softer layers grow out more gracefully than short choppy ones. Curtain and side-swept bangs blend into face-framing layers, while short blunt fringes may need clips, headbands or a blending trim until they reach the length of the rest.
