Tapering

Tapering is gradually shortening hair toward the ends or neckline so it blends smoothly into the surrounding length. In a shag it is used at the nape of short versions and at the ends to avoid a blunt line. It matters because the transition decides whether the cut looks soft or abrupt. As the tapered area grows, the shape loosens, so short shags tend to need shaping more often than long ones.
