Feathering

Feathering is cutting hair so the ends taper into soft, wispy points that blend into surrounding hair, giving a light, airy finish. It matters in a shag because it removes the blunt line at the ends and lets the layers separate and move. It is usually done with point cutting, slicing or a razor. Too much on fine hair can leave the bottom looking see-through, so many stylists keep the perimeter fuller. See also: Point cutting, Razor cut, Perimeter, and the guide What Is a Shag Haircut?
